Welcome. I am Patrick Hickey, your Bark Busters Dog Trainer and Dog Behavioral Therapist in Charlotte South.

I've been an animal lover and dog owner all my life, but my heart still belongs to my 14-year-old Akita, named Karma. Sadly, Karma crossed over a short time ago after living a full and happy life after I rescued and rehabilitated her. I've also been a rescuer all my life, having served my country for more than 20 years in The Army and as a Medevac helicopter pilot. I'm a proud Army veteran and small business owner, and have been a resident of Charlotte, North Carolina for more than 10 years.

In addition to my military service, I've also previously worked at a large financial institution training clients. Through my military and corporate careers, I've dedicated my life to teaching, training, saving, and improving lives.

Now, as your local Bark Busters Certified Dog Trainer and Dog Behavioral Therapist, I am able to merge my love and passion for dogs with my desire to teach, train, and rescue. Helping families live happier lives together with their dogs is my passion.

My dog training methods are based on the foundational principals of compassionate leadership, affirmation and praise, and safety and security. I help dog owners and their canine companions communicate, and watch unwanted dog behaviors disappear.

Wow! I can't say enough good things about Patrick - even after ONLY ONE training session! At the end of our 1st appointment, he had trained my dogs ... or rather, trained ME to train my dogs... to STOP jumping on me (and everyone who came in the door), to stop pulling on their leashes and walking ahead of me but rather to be attentive and walk right next to me, and to come when called! I know I have to work with them to make this new training "stick", but Patrick explained the WHY of what he taught me to do, which totally made sense and will help me stick with it. Thank you, Patrick, for being so incredible! I'll post an update here in a week or so, surely bragging about how well the boys are doing. Note to all: If your dog/dogs are doing ANYTHING that you don't want them to do, like barking, whining, telling YOU when it's time to play, Patrick can help you! I had tried everything - and this is the first time I've seen results.

This review is for Patrick.
We recently started working with Patrick after having worked with Jordan previously. We are happy with the training methodology of Bark Busters and Jordan helped us get started. What I was very pleased with Patrick is that he came in and took our training with our dog Maddie to the next level.

After a few months, we were forgetting the "growl" and letting Maddie rule us again. Patrick quickly straightened that out and within 15 minutes, I was much firmer and Maddie responded immediately. That training with Patrick continues to pay dividends. I don't know what we would have done without Bark Busters. Some reviewers may not like the fact that WE actually need to be trained, not the dogs. They will respond when we know their language.
I highly recommend Patrick and Bark Busters. It seems to me that Bark Busters has been more effective as a training that some of my neighbors who send their dogs away to doggie boot camp and come back and can't maintain it. Again, it is about training us to direct and respond to our dogs in their language; not ours.

We will use Bark Busters again and recommend Patrick to you.

Let me start by saying that our 5-star experience began with our initial call with Meg. She was super knowledgeable and passionate which helped me to get excited about this next phase in our life with our dogs. We have 3 rescue dogs with separation anxiety paired with a strong pack mentality (one boxer mix, one chow mix and one pit-bull mix). Over the years, as life got busier, we found it easier to just "give in" with the dogs which has created major behavioral issues. Three dogs is a lot of work but its time to make a much needed change. Our first child is on the way this spring so we have some HEAVY work to do! We wanted a training program that was humane and would work with us in the our space. Our trainer Patrick was amazing from the moment he stepped foot in our home. He was patient, listened to my myriad of concerns and worked effortlessly to train my husband, my mother and myself to what changes needed to be made. I would be lying if I said that this wasn't ridiculously challenging work, given that we have 3 stubborn dogs. But we saw immediate improvement from day 1!! In three short days, the power is continuing to shift back to my husband and I which is a necessity at this point! We both trust that if we continue to follow the program, each and every day, all of us will have a much better quality of life thanks to Patrick!!!

Thank you for being the exception. It seems every training system today relies on prong and e-collars. I was so excited to find a system that didn't train on fear or punishments. I was even more excited once I learned how it's based on a Dog's natural tendancies. Patrick made an immediate impact. Our dogs started correcting behaviors immediately. Patrick was AWESOME! He responded quickly, was on time and very professional. We saw immediate results with our year and half year old schnauzer/poodle mix. Patrick did a great job explaining the techniques we need to practice with Dunkin.
He spent over 3 hours on the first visit practicing the techniques both inside and outside.
This was after not being very happy with our first trainer.
There was a noticeable difference.

We contacted Bark Busters to help us with Luna, our people reactive dog. We talked to Patrick about the issues that we were facing and the goals we wanted to achieve. Patrick explained the training method and walked us through exercises to use with Luna. By the end of the first session, we already saw a world of difference. She wasn’t barking or lunging at Patrick. We had a friend come over a few days after working with her and she is like a completely different dog. She listened and allowed people in our home. We had our first training with Bark Busters with Jordan and it was a very good experience. Of course, it is really training "humans" that is most important and I am pleased to say that it is still working and growing more effective with my rescue dog Maddie, a American Straffordshire Terrier mix (Pit Bull) She is loving, willful and we couldn't even begin to imagine managing her without the "growl." Jordan left to pursue other interests and we were blessed to have Patrick step in.
Patrick came and was even more effective with his style and own interest himself in rehabbing rescue dogs, especially the ones that many people don't understand.
Maddie immediately obeyed him ( I guess his growl was more effective ;-) and the kind and firm guidance helped us take her training to another level. He is available for continued work. I couldn't be more pleased with his training and for Bark Busters.
I highly recommend Patrick and the way he trains and takes care of his clients; human and dogs.

We have seen great progress with our rescue pup Argo. Our trainer Patrick has helped us significantly with his obedience training. Since day one, he has alleviated the leash pulling, separation anxiety and aggression towards other animals. We were worried about our ability to care for Argo, but with Patrick’s help, he has become a model citizen. It makes so much more sense than attending classes, or shipping your dog off to boot camp, neither of which can address your dog's daily environment. Training Tucker in his home and neighborhood has been more effective and successful, than any other training we had available for our older dogs. The first session was not a "meet and greet", training started the minute Jordan came to the door. We have 3 dogs, and knowledge of basic training. We were struggling with a large pup, 8 months old, who was not responding to any of our "go to" methods of training a pup. The first visit addressed issues in the home and outside as they were happening! It is truly unbelievable, but after the first training session, Tucker was a completely different dog. Jordan has been amazing with follow up training sessions as needed. The ongoing support has frankly been something I did not expect. I can text a question, send a video of an issue, ask for a training visit, and get an immediate response. Bark Busters" philosophy of training as needed as opposed to weekly visits, make so much sense. Dogs are smart and quickly learn to do all the right things when the "teacher" is there, much like children. After the initial session, Jordan has come to the house to address either new issues, or address setbacks as needed. He has come to walk with us, to tweak training, met us at Lowe's to address Tucker's fear of people due to COVID 19 and reduced exposure to people, provided us with a multitude of resources, and has been "real time" accessible for questions. He has worked with both my daughters on establishing a pack leader role with our dogs as well. We invested in our dog and Jordan matched that investment. If you are looking for the whole enchilada, Bark Busters, and specifically, Jordan Wakefield is it.

We 2 pooches that we love! Like most dogs, they dont always behave the way we would like them to. One of our problems was crazy barking everytime the doorbell rang, or someone knocked on the door. Another issue we had was the constant jumping on guest whenever given the opportunity of meeting a new friend. As much as we tried to control and train our fur babies, we just never seemed to be able to get a handle on it. We made the call to Bark Busters and boy have we been delighted with the results of the training techniques that Jordan brought to the table to address these issues. We have seen amazing results in a relatively short period of time, and are amazed at how quickly our dogs have responded to the training that Jordan has provided to ALL of us! Jordan is a great guy that certainly a special and thorough way of training... We are so grateful for his expertise, patience and lessons. Christie was an amazing trainer. She helped us so much in how to best train our dogs- in terms of separation anxiety, crate training, bad door behavior and on-the-leash behavior. We called her for separation anxiety and that was fixed within the first three weeks! She really makes it clear how to communicate with your dog for desired results. She (and the program) give you the tools to garner the specific results you want. Moreover, she always has a line of communication open, if you are confused or something needs to adjusted. We felt like we could always call her. We have seen positive results in both our older dog (9 years) as well as our new 1 year old dog (who we called about). Overall our dogs are happier and much better behaved, and we are much better at correcting them and understanding the issues. We would highly recommend training with Christie.

We adopted Kuechly when he was 10 months old and even though he was sweet, he was constantly jumping on us and our guests. He was also pulling on the leash and mouthy. After the first session with Christie he had stopped jumping, being mouthy, and was a submissive, enjoyable dog. I couldn’t believe the change after just one session. I went from doubting it would ever get better to enjoying my dog and no longer being embarrassed to have guests in my home. The leash training has also been extremely beneficial and the pulling was significantly less after just a couple sessions.

I highly recommend Christie to train you to have a more respectful dog. My husband went from being a “not a dog person” to loving our dog. We can’t thank Christie enough for training us to take control of our house again.

I called Christie at Bark Busters when I adopted a rescue and brought him into our home with our 5 year old basset hound. The two dogs did not get along and I was worried I had made a terrible mistake. I also wanted help with leash manners so that I could take the new dog on hikes, walks, and runs with me. It became obvious very quickly that he had little to no leash experience and was very nippy with the leash. I felt these issues could all be resolved but I needed help. Christie was able to help us immediately on the very first visit in getting the dogs under control so that we could have a peaceful home again. She taught us how to communicate more effectively with the dogs so that we, the humans, are seen as the pack leaders. She was very understanding of certain limitations my husband has due to back injuries and surgeries. She also worked well with my 12 year old son to make sure the entire family is on the same page. We are all extremely happy with Christie and her work. The sessions are fun! But more importantly, the methods taught are both effective and humane. We continue to see improvements every day and will continue with the Bark Busters methods. I would highly recommend her service to anyone who needs help with their dogs. She addresses the root of the problem by getting the human/dog relationship in order first which makes all other issues much easier to resolve.

Christie worked wonders with our two dogs! We reached out to Christie to help improve our dogs behavior in anticipation of the birth of our first child.
