A question that people often have is why is their dog misbehaving?
While there can be numerous reasons that dogs misbehave, there are a few common ones:
One is that the dog never received an education so it doesn't know what to do. If a dog has never been taught to "come," then "come" really has no association with the action. The same obviously holds true of any other commands. A dog (or person) can't do what he/she doesn't know or understand.
This is sometimes an issue with my clients and I help them teach their dogs the basics. Most of my clients though have actually taken their dogs through basic obedience classes or have taught their dogs the basics themselves. In fact a lot of my clients' dogs were star pupils in school, and many have even excelled at intermediate and advanced training.
So why, then, if the dog knows what to do, doesn't he do what he's supposed to do? The real answer to this can take some investigation to discover but there are two common reasons dogs misbehave when they know what to do.
One is that the dog is feeling some stress which is causing the behavior or misbehavior. This might be the case if the dog is destructive or gets into mischief when no one else is home but is good when the family is home. The opposite might also be true, where the dog is good when the family is gone but misbehaves dramatically when they are home. This can also be true with dogs that are growling or biting. Extreme or over-reactions are often due to stress factors. In these situations, I work with my clients on reducing the factors causing the dog's stress and changing the way the dog feels about those situations. Once the stresses are no longer factors, the problem behavior(s) are typically reduced or eliminated.
Another common reason for dogs that know the basics but don't do them is confusion regarding the relationships with their family. Specifically, there is confusion regarding who is supposed to be the decision maker(s) in the house. People can inadvertently give dogs the idea that they are in charge. It's not usually intentional but is typically due to differences between dogs and people. Dogs and people each have their own perspectives of the world and the differences can be important. When a dog thinks he's the leader in the house, he's not likely to listen to the people because he thinks they are subordinates. This is a common issue if the dog has "selective hearing" and will do what he's asked only when he thinks there's something in it for him such as a treat. In these situations, I work on clearing up the confusion between people and their dogs. Once everyone understands and is feeling good about their roles in the family, the situation usually improves dramatically.
These are the most common reasons that dogs misbehave, but there are others, of course. Sometimes I find that there is a combination of reasons why the dogs are misbehaving. You and your dog(s) are unique. Your experiences and personalities are your own so the solutions to your situation will be unique to you also. There is no one-size-fits-all answer to all situations because of the unique nature of our lives and relationships.

We teach you to communicate with your pet.
Blah, blah, blah, bad dog! blah blah. Do you think your dog isn't listening to you? Maybe you're simply not speaking his language. You may have heard of dog whisperer or dog listener techniques. The Bark Busters dog training method is based on the way dogs communicate with each other and how they learn from older, more important dogs in the pack. This is what makes our dog training unique and effective.
Why do we train in your home?
Your dog lives with a family, in a home. This is where he misbehaves most often so this is where training is most effective. Dogs learn by association. Bark Busters teaches your dog to listen in the home environment. If he does not listen at home, he will not listen outside your territory.
Training in your home is a one-on-one system without the distraction of other dogs or the stress of being sent away for training.
Of course, where you are experiencing problems outside the home such as pulling on the lead or dog aggression, we will set up controlled training situations in the park or wherever is most practical.
