Robert Machi

I’m a local kid. I grew up in Gravesend, Brooklyn, was raised in a loving, blue-collar, Italian-American family, and I was valedictorian of Lafayette High School in 1989. I have a B.B.A. in accounting from Baruch College C.U.N.Y., and I worked in the financial services industry for 10 years, where I was never really happy. I wanted an interesting career but couldn’t figure out what that would be.

We have always had a dog in the family. My first one was an angel, a German Shepherd named Beauty on whom I would fall asleep when I was a baby. She died when I was about 10 and I was heartbroken. We then got another Shepherd, but she turned out to be fearful and aggressive. My next dog, Baby, was a Shepherd mix that we got from a shelter, but we had to give her away, too, because she chewed everything in the house. I also had a Chihuahua named PeeWee. He was a lovable little guy but he did well with the training, even though he was 13 years old. He passed away 1 year later with cancer. I now have 3 Boston Terriers—Winston, Rosie & Sadie. Not only do I know the pain of losing a dog, but I now also know the joy of having a great one.

There was a lot of confusion for me in my career search, but I had good and supportive people around me who helped in one way or another. One worked at a franchise-search firm; he took a personal interest in me and introduced me to Bark Busters. I love dogs, so being a dog trainer looked like a great idea. I began to investigate Bark Busters, and I had great conversations with the heads of Bark Busters USA, as well as with several franchise owners. Although I had some fears and doubts, I had heard so many positive things from Bark Busters franchise owners, that I was practically overwhelmed. Ultimately, the decision was mine and I made a great one. The next thing I knew, I was the new owner of a franchise with international recognition. I went to the Home Office in Denver to be trained by the best trainers in the world.

As a Bark Buster, I absolutely love what I do and I’ve never been happier. I help strengthen family relationships between people and their dogs. I think the best compliment I ever received was, "We really feel like a family now." In some extreme cases, I am even saving a dog’s life. I often think of the two dogs we gave away and I feel that if only I knew then what I know now, I would have saved them from being given up on & given away. Now, when I meet people who are frustrated with their dogs, I know I can help them. That’s what I do for a living. How great is that!
