Welcome to Bark Busters of Greater Toledo!! If you are here at the Bark Busters site, then you are looking for a way to train your canine family member(s). Great! I encourage you to investigate us and our training method as well as other trainers in the area and their training methods. You must feel comfortable with the trainer who you are trusting to help you take care of your dog(s).

Here at Bark Busters, we teach you how to communicate to your dog in their language using positive training methods that are fun for all. Having owned a dog(s), you already know that dogs are pack animals. They look for guidance and direction from the dominant dog in the pack. We as humans usually do not have the consistency or knowledge to take our place in this role, so your dog has taken the role as pack leader. Some dogs can handle this huge responsibility, while others find it overwhelming and much too big of a responsibility. Most behavioral issues come from the fact that your dog feels that it has be the leader of your human/canine pack. I educate the owners on leadership techniques that your dog already knows. I don't use any physical, harsh or in-humane methods in my training; using these methods of training can destroy your bond and the respect that you have with your dog.

I myself have two beautiful dogs: a 10-year-old Lab/chow mix and a 2-year-old chocolate Lab. With the older dog, I had tried treat training (which is what I grew up with), downloaded manuals off the Internet and even tried techniques that I observed on TV shows. The methods that I tried seemed to work only for a short time because I was teaching them to behave for the treat and they never had consistent behavior especially when I didn’t have a treat available for them. Here at Bark Busters, we do not want to just manage your dog’s behavior, but change your dog’s thinking and what drives them to the behavior in the first place. We are teaching your dog to make his own right decisions.

My name is Cheryl Kubista and I am the trainer here in the Toledo area. I am a current and active member of the Wood County Humane Society (www.woodcountyhumanesociety.org). I help out there whenever I can to make the animals that are at the shelter more adoptable. I am a member of the APDT-The Association of Pet Dog Trainers. I am a current member of the Better Business Bureau in the Toledo area. I also help out at various shelters in the Toledo area.

I feel that we can all do our part to better the life of shelter animals-whether it is adopting them to give them good homes, donating our time to help out, or donating supplies and needed items to better their lives. If we all do just a little, it will all add up and make a big impact in the lives of an animal!

Training Dogs the Aussie Way!

What my clients say about Bark Busters . . .

Our Sharpei, Nelson, has the most fun-loving, comical nature of any dog. Eager to please and quick to protect, he has been a rich addition to our lives; however, just after he entered the “terrible twos,” our sweet pup began to give us some problems. We noticed that if Nelson was left out of the cage while we were gone, he would gnaw at molding around the doors, tear up garbage, or reach for items off of the counter to destroy. We had tried various obedience schools, but none offered a solution to the problem— they simply taught us ways to avoid household damage. Nelson’s destructive nature reached a climax when he broke out of his cage and clawed at all of the cupboards and doors in an intense effort to get out of the house. We were left with no choice but to put him in the garage during the day, and neighbors remarked at the constant barking. In addition to the problems we were having at home, Nelson had been turned away from the vet’s office because of hostility to the workers, and to be honest, we were fearful of his aggression with visitors in general.

That was when we learned through an advertisement of Bark Busters. Cheryl’s program was our last hope, and we waited in anticipation for her advice after the first appointment. To our surprise, Bark Busters recognized and diagnosed the problem quickly as separation anxiety—a term no one had mentioned with us before. Cheryl took our training back to fundamentals and worked with us to respond properly to our dog and his antics. In addition to our “homework” with Nelson, Bark Busters was also incredibly available to answer questions that arose during our training. We began to notice immediate docility and Nelson’s aggressiveness noticeably subsided. Now we implement the tools Bark Busters showed us on a daily basis in routine activities, and we are happy to say that our stubborn Sharpei, while still stubborn, peacefully resides in the house while we are out, and enjoys playing with us rather than our belongings. Thank you, Bark Busters! –Pat Herman, Perrysburg, OH

Our therapist was easy to follow and she (Cheryl) gave lots of examples that made the techniques easy to understand. Wonka was much calmer by the end of the first session, you saw definite results. I would recommend Bark Busters because from the short time it already seemed to show results. I like how Bark Busters is a non-physical training and mostly uses tones, and helps you understand how your dog thinks. I found the training very informative and helpful.-- Carli S.,  Toledo (6-mo-old Boxer named Wonka)

I was impressed with the effect of the techniques and I know what I need to do now to correct his behavior issues. Lakota was showing response to the techniques and it was impressive to see him actually learning and understanding. I would recommend Bark Busters because it seems to me to be the most natural way to correct behavior issues versus a lot of other techniques.-- Cassandra S., Bowling Green (2-yr-old male Shepherd/Airdale mix named Lakota)

Cheryl was very fascinating to listen to and very easy to understand. The results were unbelievable! I can't wait for my husband to come home and ring the doorbell! I am very pleased with the natural techniques. I never thought of myself as the leader of the pack, but I am up to the challenge. What a fun learning experience. It all makes so much sense. I would recommend Bark Busters.  I can see where Abby and Waylon (Labs) will be great examples when I start bragging about this .-- Cindy F., Grand Rapids (2 Yellow Labs: 5-yr-old male named Waylona and 4-yr-old female named Abby)

Callie (4 months, Shepherd pup) learned fast! I am definitely pleased with the natural techniques that Bark Busters uses. The training experience was fun and helpful. Cheryl was good with people and animals. -- Diane S., Perrysburg (4-mo-old female Shepherd named Callie)

Yes, I found the training experience enjoyable. It taught me many things that I had been doing wrong. I was pleased with the natural training techniques. I hope that it will allow us to enjoy her last days. We had noticeable results by the end of the training with our 17-year-old Boxer. Roxie was starting to follow us and respond to the BAHs by the end of the training. Cheryl explained to us the way that dogs think. I would recommend Bark Busters and I think that is great for younger dogs. -- Dr. Amanda Henderson, South Suburban Animal Hosp., Bowling Green (7-yr-old Boxer named Roxie)

I especially appreciate the visual aids and written materials for reference. I was pleased with the natural training techniques.  I don't care for the training by way of brut force; I really like the pack mentality approach. Cheryl obviously enjoys her job and truly cares about the furry and non-furry clients. --Jennifer and Brian E., Elmore (Two one- yr-old male Yorkies named Bailey and Baxter)

I saw noticeable results and my dogs responded immediately to the training techniques. I am very pleased with the natural training techniques. I feel that I am learning a lot along with my dogs. I have been recommending Bark Busters because it is effective and within one's own home environment. I've enjoyed working with Cheryl! --Margaret W.,  Bowling Green (11-yr-old Shepherd/Rottweiler mix named Carl, and 7-yr-old Shep mix named Kai)

I absolutely love Cheryl! She is very personable with me and my dogs. Her way of teaching is very easy to understand. Her demonstrations are impressive as the dogs react instantly. Her actions flow, as if they are second nature. She also seems to be very adaptable to individual households: she recognizes the needs and teaches accordingly. She is very eash to reach for follow-up help or questions. I noticed a difference in my dogs before the session was even over. My dogs are so much happier and playing together. I recommend the program to everyone I talk to. The training techniques are really common sense, but obviously nothing that I would have figured out on my own. It is more realistic than trying to bribe them with treats to do a trick. I am being taught a lifestyle. --Mona G., Toledo (2 female Rottweilers named Porscha (3) and Sasha (5))

Just wanted to let you know how well Scooter is doing. He's really become a very obedient and polite dog. He keeps us laughing with his Border Collie antics, and still never ceases to amaze us with his brainiac reputation! Much of the credit goes to you and your patience in teaching us how to teach him! When friends and family remark about his good behavior, I always tell them about Bark Busters. The only negative side of this is, I don't get to see you any more! You're such a fun, upbeat, positive person. You're a great asset to the company! Just wanted to say thanks again! --Pam R.,  Perrysburg (10-mo-old Border Callie named Scooter)

Cheryl, our therapist, was very personable. Spoke as if my dogs were the only ones in the world. I was shocked at the result, letting someone in the door without them running up went so quickly, it blew me away! I am definitely pleased with the natural techniques. I spend no money on treats. They respond immediately!! I found the training enjoyable. I felt so comfortable with Cheryl. It's as if we have known each other for years. I would definitely recommend Bark Busters; at home, attention not split amongst owners, training based only on my needs. Accessible at all times. Cheryl answers questions and training tips everyday if necessary!! EXCELLENT, EXCELLENT, EXCELLENT! -- Rebecca K.,  Maumee (1-yr-old-Shepher/Rottweiler mix name Kaila and 6-month-old Shep/Doberman mix named Sage

Cheryl was very thorough and very explicit in her explanations. We understand everything. The results were phenomenal, especially with Sadie (7-mo-old female Boxer/American Bulldog mix). The techniques were the best we have seen so far and the most effective and least physical/violent. It was a great experience and very interesting. The time went by so fast. I would definitely recommend them to everyone. The training methods are so easy to understand and to implement, and very effective. This has been a great experience and we are seeing big improvements in both dogs!! --Ruth T., Toledo (7-mo-old Boxer/Amer Bulldog mix named Sadie, and and 4-yr-old Doberman mix named Dakota)

At first I was real skeptical. After all, I had an aggressive 10-year-old Rottweiler who ruled the house and a 3-year-old Husky mix. Cheryl came to my house and after 3 hours, I had a remarkable change in both dogs. I'm in charge of the house now! I keep on working with them. I think that anything is possible with Bark Busters training!! --Sarina &Fred B., Toledo (10-yr-old Rottweiler named Rajah, and 3-yr-old Husky mix named Nakita)

Cheryl went above and beyond to ensure that we understood the techniques. We absolutely noticed results by the end of the training! We are doing great. We still have lots of work to do but are so pleased with the results thus far. The natural training techniques make so much more sense to communicate with our dog in a way that he naturally understands. The training was very interesting, hard work. So much to remember, but we enjoyed the work and love the difference that it is making in our lives. I absolutely would recommend Bark Busters and in fact, I have passed along the info to two of my friends already. We love working with Cheryl. She obviously loves what she is doing and it really shows in her work with her clients .--Sue and Bill T., Bowling Green (3-yr-old Great Pyrenees named Strummer)

WOW! I have a changed dog in such little time. This training is awesome! I was surprised that it really works I have a new dog and he has a new owner!! Thanks, Bark Busters!! --Tanna C., Toledo (2-yr-old Pit Bull/Sherpei mix named Titus)

Cheryl's comments were clear and her use of examples and involvement with the puppy helped us. I'm pleased with the reward and correction is verbal mostly since it's something you always have opposed to a treat. The home situation for training is very enjoyable for training. Having a do is an investment worth the effort to train. --Ted and Anne M., Perrysburg (9-wk-old Min Pin named Mitsy)

At first, I thought it would be too much to remember, but after I started doing it, I found that it was pretty easy. Seger  responded very well. I like that there is not hitting or punishing your dog. Other than myself being nervous that I could not do it, I enjoyed it when Seger responded positively. I have already told friends about the Bark Buster way. I hope with consistency, he will get better every day. I enjoy him so much more now. --Tracy Gray, Toledo (12-wk-old Weimaraner named Seger)
