Is your dog’s behavior causing problems or stress in your home? Your dog does not mean to be bad. He thinks he is doing the job he was born to do. Dogs follow their instincts, the main one being that of survival. To survive, your dog has to be part of a strong pack. That means it needs strong pack leaders. Dogs crave leadership because it makes them feel safe and secure. As humans, we don’t naturally act the way a pack leader would, so your dog feels the need to take on the job. Dogs in chaotic domestic packs, view their leaders as weak, and feel the need to take on the pack leadership role. My goal is to educate you on how your dog thinks and communicates so you can understand what your dog needs from you to view you as the canine pack leader.
Many dogs in domestic packs know the basics, but due to confusion regarding the relationships within the family pack, won’t perform them. The confusion is in regards to who is supposed to be the decision maker(s) in the house. Dogs and people each have their own perspectives and views of the world and the differences are important. When the dog thinks he is the leader in the house, he’s not likely to listen to the people because he views them as subordinates. This is a common issue if the dog has “selective hearing” and will only do what he is asked when he thinks there is something in it for him, such as a treat. I work on clearing up the confusion between people and their dogs. Once everyone understands their roles in the family, the situation improves dramatically.
