Toby, our rescue dog, started out with his potty training just fine, but then it turned very cold and it was difficult to get him to go outside. He went poop a few times near my front door at that point in time, and then I remembered that his previous owner claimed he went potty on "training pads, a/k/a pee pads" at some point when they first purchased him. I put down a few of those pads to see what would happen. He has continued to go potty (both #1&2) on the pads on a daily basis, AND goes outside also (mainly pee). Is this a bad habit to get into? I often spend over 20 minutes each time, SEVERAL times a day, to get him to go to the bathroom and sometimes he won't go, but comes in and goes on the pee pad just a few minutes later. I have worked with him for 2 months now and am very patient. Should I continue using the pads or stop this habit? It's still cold out, but not unbearable. Thanks.

Hi, my dad (and family) recently rescued a 7 year old German Shepherd about 2 months ago. In the beginning, she was doing great. Now, she has gotten very protective. She barks excessively when guests enter the home, calms down, but when they get up and move she's barking and trying to nip at them again. She has also been cornering and nipping at my brother (who lives with us, but doesn't spend a lot of time with her or aid in training). She is a very pleasant, happy dog with my dad, mom and I at home. And doesn't display any aggressive or protective behaviors when she's "taken out of her territory". Please, give us some training tips to make her less protective and nippy. She has not bitten anyone previously to our knowledge, but we need to have her realize that she doesn't decide who can enter the home, and to be nicer to my brother. (We are all adults in the house- age range from 22-55).
