Aggression

Aggression in dogs can stem from fear, anxiety, territorial instincts, or learned behavior. It may show up as growling, lunging, or biting and can escalate if not addressed. Dog aggression training in Charleston focuses on identifying the root cause and helping you establish calm leadership and clear communication, reducing tension and creating a safer relationship with your dog.

Attention Seeking Behaviors

Barking, pawing, whining, or nudging for attention can become persistent if unintentionally reinforced. Dogs repeat behaviors that get results. Bark Busters Charleston teaches you how to set clear boundaries and reinforce calm, desirable behavior. Help your dog learn how to earn attention in positive ways.

A dog barking upward

Barking

Barking is how dogs communicate, but excessive barking often signals boredom, anxiety, frustration, or lack of direction. Whether your dog barks at noises, people, or when left alone, it can quickly become disruptive. Excessive barking training in Charleston can help you understand why your dog is barking and teaches effective ways to control it.

Crate Training

Crate training gives your dog a safe, secure space while supporting house training and routine. When introduced properly, it becomes a place of comfort, not confinement. Crate training in Charleston helps build positive associations so your dog feels relaxed and confident. It also eases separation anxiety and keeps your dog safe during travel, storms, or busy household moments.

Jumping

Jumping often stems from excess energy, excitement, or unclear boundaries. While jumping may seem friendly, it can quickly become overwhelming or unsafe. Puppy nipping and biting

Nipping & Biting

Nipping and biting are common in puppies as they explore the world with their mouths, but without guidance, these behaviors can become problematic. Puppies don’t intend to be aggressive, they’re learning. James & Michelle can teach you how to calmly interrupt unwanted behavior, avoid reinforcing it, and redirect your puppy to appropriate outlets like chew toys.

Dog Training Reviews & Testimonials

See what dog owners in Charleston have to say

James and Michelle were really awesome to work with. They trained us how to train our dog. Our puppy had enormous anxiety when we adopted her and we almost returned her to the breeder because it was so stressful for all of us. I am so glad we found Bark Busters because their techniques truly reduced the overwhelming anxiety and excessive barking of our puppy and also importantly transformed our relationship with our dog. Working with Bark Busters truly improved our quality of life in our home and we are so thankful for them. They understand dog psychology and use techniques that are both healthy and kind to the dogs while building trust. We would highly recommend for anyone who is stressed out by their dog’s anxiety or behavioral issues. It can truly transform your life.
Michelle is absolutely amazing. I can not believe the changes I am seeing since hiring her. She is teaching ME how to be the leader of my dog. She is "training" me how to train my dog. What's interesting is these techniques are relatively simple once they are explained. Michelle is very knowledgeable. She is always available through phone or email. She answers questions in simple and easy to understand terms. Michelle is patient and kind. She never makes me feel bad or stupid when asking questions.

After the 1st session my husband and I began to see improvements in our dog's general obedience. Michelle has given me the hope for my dog. She has given me the confidence and the know how to introduce my dog to people in a safe manner.

The program is not cheap but both my husband and I believe it to be worth every penny.
Hands down worth the money from Day 1. The resource guarding of our dog was so bad. We hired a trainer who helped but didn’t help “enough” and the resource guarding became worse to the point that our sweet little Havanese was biting our children in unpredictable moments. James came in and taught us about the psychology of a dog and we were able to create a space where our dog felt safe! His whole demeanor has changed! With consistency and whole family effort it has been a blessing for our family! We truly appreciate James and Bark Busters so much!
Working with James has been an extremely rewarding experience. He is so knowledgeable and helpful. With his help my untrained, six year old, rescue has made tremendous improvements. All of his recommendations have been much easier than I expected. Coco and I have learned so much and we are able to practice the lessons James shares with us. I highly recommend Bark Busters and James to train your pet. I know you will be as pleased as I have been and you will not regret this worthwhile
investment for the life of your pet. Thank you, James. Coco and I appreciate you more than you’ll ever know.
James and Michelle were really awesome to work with. They trained us how to train our dog. Our puppy had enormous anxiety when we adopted her and we almost returned her to the breeder because it was so stressful for all of us. I am so glad our veterinarian told us about Bark Busters because their techniques truly reduced the overwhelming anxiety and excessive barking of our puppy and also importantly transformed our relationship with our dog without medication.
Our dog has severe separation anxiety so we reached out to Bark Busters for help. After one session working with James there is a huge difference in our dogs behavior. He is giving us the tools we need to help our dogs behavior with this situation as well as keeping him from running out of the yard, and staying back from the door. I would highly recommend their services to anyone needing behavioral assistance
James is thoughtful, wise, careful and confident. He quickly and easily effectively diagnosed our issue with our dog and gave us great coaching on correcting unwanted behavior. His approach is rooted in a clear and nuanced understanding of dog psychology, and human psychology, and it shows. Highly recommended.
Bark Busters training absolutely transformed the dynamic with our two beloved pit bull rescues!!
As dog-owners for 18 years, it was extremely disheartening to be experiencing such a difficult time with these two otherwise sweet and affectionate dogs. Both were very reactive to other dogs, cats, squirrels, birds, etc. and walks had become a dreaded task. One was extremely fearful and reactive to loud noises. After numerous incidents of being dragged or knocked over during walks, we decided to look into some training. Within one session, James taught us how to communicate effectively with them and gave us skills to practice to achieve calm, relaxing walks with our pups. It is well worth the time and the expense to give it a try. We wish we had done it sooner instead of spending a fortune on dozens of leashes, "no-pull" harnesses, prong collars, even pet store training classes that never, never fixed the problem. The method James teaches WORKS!! It is not an exaggeration to say it was life-changing for our family!!
And in the span of just a few weeks, I have never seen our two dogs, Honey & Cookie, more confident and content.
Both my husband & I have enjoyed working with James!! He’ is truly a dog “whisperer”! Although, we’ve had many dogs in our life, we found ourselves struggling with a young lively pup. He was reassuring, patient and always positive. We definitely benefited from his innumerable advice. Now after almost a year, we’ve gained a handle on our precious pup, Etta! She’s much more disciplined and delightful because of his guidance! We most wholeheartedly recommend Bark Busters!!
James with Bark Busters is absolutely incredible. My dog Jack is now 8 years old, and we have been working with Bark Busters since he was just 1. Thanks to James and the techniques he taught me, Jack grew into a well-trained, happy dog.

What I love most about Bark Busters is that the service is for the life of your dog. Even though Jack is very well trained now, I’ve still reached out to James over the years for guidance—like when introducing a new dog into the home or when I just needed a refresher on training techniques. Every time, he has been so kind, patient, and incredibly helpful.

James has a wealth of knowledge, but what really sets him apart is that he doesn’t just train your dog—he teaches you how to understand your dog. The skills and techniques he shares truly last a lifetime and make such a difference in your relationship with your pet.

I can’t recommend James and Bark Busters highly enough. If you want real results and a trainer who genuinely cares, Bark Busters are the people to call.
We had a beagle puppy who is very very very stubborn and thought there was zero way to ever go on a smooth walk and be able to leave the house with him out of the crate and not have everything chewed up. We began working with James at Bark Busters and saw immediate changes from our stubborn dog walking by our side on every walk and him being able to chill by himself out of the crate for hours when we leave the house. James has really been the best with designing a plan and making sure we are executing it. 1000% recommend working with James and Bark Busters!
I want to share my deep gratitude for the incredible work Bark Busters did for our family. We have two female dogs from the same litter, and we had no idea that this could lead to serious behavioral issues. Unfortunately, it did. They started fighting over everything—attention, food, you name it—and at one point, I ended up with a bite that required stitches. With a toddler in the house, I was really worried about safety and heartbroken at the thought of having to rehome one of our dogs.

Enter Bark Busters. We decided to give professional training one last shot, and I am so thankful we did. James, the owner and our trainer, was absolutely wonderful. He gave us practical, effective strategies and a solid plan that we followed closely. Now, our dogs are so much better behaved. We haven’t had any more fights, and I’ve been able to keep both of them together in our home, which means the world to me.

One of the best parts is that Bark Busters offers lifetime support for the dogs they train. If we ever need a refresher, they’ll come back out and help. They even offer to assist if, heaven forbid, the dogs ever needed to be rehomed. It’s been a life-changing experience, and I can’t recommend them enough. Thanks to James and Bark Busters, our family is whole and happy.
Working with Bark Busters has been an absolutely top-notch experience from start to finish. Scheduling was easy and they took the time to truly understand our needs before we even began. When James arrived for our first session, he came fully prepared and immediately demonstrated a clear understanding of the behaviors we wanted to improve. The trainer's (James and Michelle) are also the owners of the company and it shows!

Within the first 30 minutes, James gave us practical tools to address barking and over-excitement when visitors come over. Both of our dogs needed different types of support, and he was able to tailor the training in a way that never felt overwhelming. We noticed improvements after every single session.

Our dog Biscuit, who used to bark excessively and pull whenever we passed people or other dogs, can now walk calmly past them without reacting. This alone has made our daily walks so much easier and so much more enjoyable.

Hands down, this has been the best investment we’ve made for our dogs. We can’t say enough good things about James and Michelle and have already recommended Bark Busters to several friends. Highly, highly recommend!
Bark Busters is life-changing. It is truly like MAGIC. After struggles with my 2 dogs' behaviors left me with 6 stitches, I was desperate for help. I spoke to their primary care vet and a behavioral vet, and both recommended putting my dogs on anti-anxiety meds for the rest of their lives. That did not feel like a solution. Instead, I called Bark Busters and James taught me how to teach my dogs. I experienced remarkable results after the very first session. The anxiety around my dogs' interactions melted away while my confidence in leading and teaching them skyrocketed. My dogs and I are way less stressed, and much more confident and happy. Bark Busters is worth every single penny!
James is really nice and he knows what he is doing. Since the first lesson my dog was a completely different pet. A lot of improvement. Totally recommended
We cannot even begin to express how grateful we are for James and Bark Busters! We’ve had our sweet rescue, Quavo, for over a year. When we first adopted him, he was fearful and anxious — traits that followed him from the shelter. His separation anxiety was severe, so we initially tried another training company that used e-collars, but unfortunately, his anxiety only got worse. I do not recommend. During that time, a new behavior started: he began snapping at people. Although he never bit anyone, the snapping was scary for our friends and family and was seriously impacting our lives. It was heartbreaking to see Quavo so anxious and unsettled around people, especially because he’s such a sweet boy once he trusts you. After just two sessions with James, EVERYTHING changed. When my family came to visit, they were able to pet and snuggle Quavo without any issues — no snapping AT ALL. It felt like we were one big happy family— something we always dreamed of. I always believed in Quavo, but I honestly didn’t expect to see such fast results. This has truly been life-changing for all of us! (Included a photo of Quavo snuggling with my mom because I still can’t believe it!) Quavo also used to struggle with leash walking, fixating on other dogs and making walks stressful. Thanks to James, walks are now enjoyable, and Quavo has improved so much. We are beyond grateful for James. His training style is incredible — he trains YOU on how to train your dog & how to properly communicate with them. He explains everything clearly and uses gentle, kind methods. He’s honest & you can tell he truly loves dogs and understands each family’s unique situation. I couldn’t recommend James or Bark Busters more. We’re so thankful to have ongoing support for Quavo throughout his life. They have truly been life savers! I’m so grateful that Quavo is able to relax and that people can now see the sweet loving boy he truly is!❤️
James is so awesome, he really knows exactly what to do and is so much fun to work with. We are super excited to have his support throughout our puppy’s lifetime!
When we brought home a new dog, the introductions didn't go well. Bark Busters, specifically the Magnificent Michelle, enabled us to keep both dogs, who now function as a pack. Michelle also gave us the tools to introduce our dog aggressive dog to other dogs, and pass dogs on the street without losing our minds. I love that the payment covers the life of the dog. A few years later, this year, Michelle helped prepare the dogs for when we brought home our baby. I feel so much more confident as a dog owner because I've been trained on how to read my dogs' body language to keep everyone safe and happy.
James with Bark Busters in Charleston, SC has been so helpful with our 3 King Charles Cavaliers. The techniques that he has shared with us have been easy to implement and effective. Our daily routine with our dogs is now a pleasure instead of chaos.
I cannot say enough good things about James and Bark Busters! My dog, Pepper, was extremely reactive to other dogs and would pull so hard on walks that I was often getting dragged. I spent eight months trying different training methods with little success—until I found James.

In only eight weeks, Pepper has completely transformed. After the very first lesson, I saw an immediate change in her behavior. Thanks to James’ incredible guidance and training techniques, she now walks calmly on a leash, listens to me, and—most importantly—we can walk around other dogs without fear of a meltdown. Our walks have gone from stressful to enjoyable, and I finally feel confident handling her.

If you’re struggling with a reactive dog, I highly recommend James. He is patient, knowledgeable, and truly understands how to bring out the best in your pup. Thank you, Bark Busters, for giving us the tools to succeed!
We found James and Bark Busters after searching for training that didn’t rely on rewards. We got so much more! We have a 3-pack of happy chill hounds that coexist in ways in our home with our young kids we had only dreamed of. Through James’ and Bark Busters methods we have gotten to know our dogs more as who they are individually but more importantly how they function as a pack that we are part of. We had previously done traditional obedience training with two of the three dogs and it was lengthy, exhausting and just way too time consuming, resulting in commands that did not stand the test of time.

Bark Busters method of behavioral training is transformative in a way that makes it natural for the dogs (and humans!) to follow and the results happened quickly for our pack by spending 10-15mins a day working with the dogs.

We loved that the majority of the training took place in our home where the most correction was needed and then we built upon that work by adding some tweaks to our leash/walking techniques that really dialed everything in.

Make the investment in your pet. James has a gift and will help build a relationship with your pups (or pack) you have been hoping for!

I can't say enough good things about BarkBusters. Their deep understanding of dog psychology and behavior made an incredible difference in my dog’s temperament in just two weeks. They use excellent tools and techniques to redirect unwanted behaviors effectively, and the results have been very good—my dog is now calmer, happier, and more secure in her place within our "pack."

James is also incredibly responsive to any questions and his contract provides ongoing support when needed, ensuring long-term success. If you're looking for a knowledgeable, patient, and results-driven trainer, I highly recommend them!
In one visit, we have experienced a complete transformation. Thank you, James. I'm not sure what we're going to talk about next visit. Maybe we can figure out what is wrong with the cat? 😂
James has helped me become a happy dog owner and my fur baby, Laney, a happier and calmer dog. Laney is a shelter rescue. When I first adopted her, she had no connection to the person on the other end of the leash. Pulling wasn’t the only issue; she was highly reactive around other dogs. I'm a shelter volunteer and had walked her numerous times and she never reacted around other dogs. But after a couple weeks of having her, that changed. It got so bad I dreaded walking her. I watched dog training videos online, read a Cesar Milan book and not much changed. What I liked about Bark Busters is that they work with you and your dog. So many places want you to hand over your dog for training. That made zero sense to me. James’ training methods are thoughtful and kind. And he respects an owner’s dog-training desires and the dog’s personality. What I learned about dogs and training from him is invaluable. What Laney has learned is that she can walk right by my side, enjoy her walks, and feel safe.
5 stars!!!
Thanks to James at Bark Busters, our 7 year old dog no longer lunges at other dogs when we walk her! James showed us great techniques that actually work and it was unbelievable how fast it worked. We were also taught what to do when we have visitors come to the door. We have a different dog! Highly recommend using Bark Busters.

Does My New Puppy Need Training?

Many new puppy owners contact us to help with basic training and to get their puppy training started on the right paw! Puppies, like infants and toddlers, need guidance to develop good behavior and a friendly disposition. There’s no one-size-fits- all approach to puppy training, but we can help you establish a solid foundation of trust and respect in a safe, nurturing environment.

With Bark Busters Charleston in-home dog training, you don’t have to wait to start training your puppy. James or Michelle come to your home and pace the sessions according to your puppy’s developmental stages and your progress. An example of Bark Busters Home Dog Training for aggressive dogs.

What Can I Do About My Dog's Aggressive Behavior?

Aggression in dogs is a learned response, often stemming from underlying fear or insecurity. To address this behavior effectively, it's crucial to identify and resolve the root cause. Through Bark Busters in-home training, we can evaluate the reasons behind your dog's aggression and guide you in applying strategies for positive change.

Bark Busters Charleston has successfully trained thousands of dogs of all ages, breeds, and sizes—including those with aggression issues. We've worked with dogs that showed aggression toward objects, other animals, people, or even their own family members. Our proven training system is designed to address these behaviors effectively, often with noticeable improvement by the end of the first session.

Resolve Aggression with Professional Dog Training

Early action is key when your dog shows signs of aggression. This means avoiding risky situations and getting professional support before things escalate. Behaviors like shaking, panting, stiff posture, or staring often come before serious behaviors like growling, lunging or barking. These are your dog’s way of saying they’re stressed—and they need help before it leads to a bite.

At Bark Busters, we never use e-collars or harsh tools. We use humane, proven methods to reduce stress and build trust. Most dogs improve quickly with calm, consistent leadership. Don’t wait for a bite. Get professional support now—before aggression becomes a habit. We're here to help.

Bark Busters is a global leader in home-based training, with more than 30 years of experience helping families create better relationships with their dogs. We focus on the root cause of behavior problems by improving communication between you and your dog.

Dogs learn best in a safe, familiar setting, which is why we come to you. Your trainer works with you where behavior matters most, then helps you build skills that hold up around everyday distractions.

We teach you how to communicate through body language, tone of voice, timing, and calm leadership so your dog can follow your guidance with confidence.

Any breed. Any age. Any issue. We are here to help you move forward with clarity, support, and results.

Home Dog Training

Our Services

Bark Busters trainers conduct the one-on-one training in your home, without the distraction of other dogs or the stress of being sent away for dog obedience training at a kennel. Once you and your dog are ready, your Charleston dog trainer, James & Michelle, will work with you outside and around real distractions — in your neighborhood, on your streets, where it matters most.
