Puppy Training

Give Your Puppy a Great Start!

Puppies need guidance to develop good manners and a well-balanced temperament. Just like infants and toddlers, they are constantly learning from their environment. That’s where you come in! While much of a puppy’s early socialization happens with their mothers and litter-mates in the first 12 weeks, you play a crucial role in reinforcing proper behavior and setting the foundation for lifelong obedience.

Bark Busters offers at-home puppy training designed to build a foundation of trust and respect in a familiar setting. Our expert puppy trainers focus on essential skills such as crate training, potty training, and leash training. Don't walk, run to work with Bark Busters. Please read my review if you relate to any crate-anxiety issues.

Here's my story: I have a puppy GSD who's shockingly lazy, but his shepherdation (separation) anxiety was really out of control to the point where he could break out of his crate AND open my front door.

I would describe myself as highly dog knowledgable so I am VERY particular about the methods used by trainers. To each their own, but e-collars, prongs, etc are band-aids (or worseners) for most problems since most dog-owners don't really understand the timing/utility of these tools enough to ween off of them at any point. If your dog is a 100/10 lunatic, then I guess I get it :|

Anywho, I was honestly shocked to learn they don't even rely on clickers or treats, just straight up dog behavior and psychology, yet have the reviews they have.

Here's my summary. I am only 2 days post training, have received a comprehensive training plan with new crate recs, have gotten 5-7 minutes of a CALM dog in his crate once I've left (a miracle), and did nothing but learn to amend MY body languages and sounds.

Bonus that Anthony was an absolute delight to work with.

A life-changing experience. John provided the most thorough, extensive lesson and training which had immediate effects on our puppy. John's patience, expertise and professionalism made the session productive and positive while training our dog. We are very grateful for John's help and understanding in helping us properly train Milton.
When we met Amber we were very impressed with her knowledge and with her enthusiasm we had just acquired a 10-month-old German Shepherd puppy and we needed to be able to not only integrate her into our family but she had a very bad habit of jumping on us and as a very large puppy, It was something we needed to address quickly .She gave us the tools and the steps we would need to not only accomplish this , but to also address some of the issues with our other dogs. We see this training as ongoing as the need arises. The total support that we get from this organization is ongoing for the life of our dogs and that was very impressive to us. We see this as a investment into our future and the future of our dogs and we know Amber will be there with us all the way.
It was a pleasure meeting Jeri for our first training. I learned so much on how to relate to Reiff. I was so happy to see a improvement only with the first lesson and it made me very hopeful and excited to know that Reiff will be able to be the best obedient and happy puppy that he deserves to be. Jeri was down to earth but very professional and you could see she loves and cares deeply of all pets.
Thank you so much and I’m looking forward to the future with Reiff.
Luis was amazing. We called him back 8 years after he initially trained Roxy as a puppy and he fully honored the lifetime guarantee. He sat with our family for a good 2 hours, if not longer I feel. He was very detailed, and patient. He was AMAZING with Roxy and the new puppy and literally had results within minutes. Thank you so much Luis!
Our dogs Jackson and Bentley are our babies— my partner and I love them more than anything in the world. We recently moved into a pet friendly luxury building and our across the hall neighbor’s nonstop complaining about their barking was creating a headache he source of stress. We called Greg and he was able to help us immediately with one 3 hour session! I really could not believe the change. They used to bark every time they heard a noise — ironically the neighbors baby — and now they are so relaxed and chill! Greg is amazing — not treats or yelling or anything harsh, just being in charge and the results are phenomenal. I highly recommend Greg to anyone whose furry friend needs a little help.
Greg from BarkBusters truly changed our lives, and we will forever be grateful for his help. When we brought our newborn home, our cocker spaniel Hudson became extremely anxious and would not stop barking at the baby. We were overwhelmed, exhausted, and honestly at our wits’ end. We didn’t know how to help Hudson or how to make the situation safe and peaceful for everyone involved. At one point, we even had to have Hudson stay with family because our dog and baby simply could not coexist in the same home. Greg stepped in with patience, understanding, and an incredible depth of knowledge. More importantly, he gave us the tools and confidence we needed to help Hudson succeed. He never made us feel judged or hopeless. He helped us understand our dog better and showed us that the situation was fixable with consistency and the right guidance. Today, Hudson is a completely different dog. Our baby and Hudson can now lie side by side calmly and safely — something that once felt impossible to us. Having our whole family together again means more than we can put into words. I would recommend Greg and BarkBusters to anyone who needs help with their dog. The investment was worth every penny for the peace, confidence, and harmony it brought back into our home.
Sharon was absolutely amazing with my little Copper! We were struggling with excessive barking and nipping whenever someone left the house or walked by outside. In just one three-hour session, Sharon not only showed me how to properly handle these situations but also helped Copper make incredible progress immediately. What impressed me most was that even after Sharon left, Copper responded to the techniques the very next day and showed a whole new level of respect and manners. He truly feels like a different dog now. Our bond has become even stronger, and our cuddle time is so much more enjoyable with the new level of trust and listening we’ve built together. I’m so grateful for Sharon’s patience, knowledge, and guidance!
GREG is a very talented dog trainer. As advertised, it’s a one-time, well-worth-it fee. My nine-year-old Golden was completely resistant to getting in the car and to walking down the front stairs of our home. With one visit lasting about 30 minutes, GREG helped Bodhie feel comfortable with both activities. No choke collars, no shock collars, and no tricks. Greg is a dog whisperer. More importantly, he taught me his effective technique. Practice and exercise took a few days, but then Bodhie was happy getting in and out of the car and walking down the stairs without hesitation. I would not use any other trainer.
I don’t usually write reviews, but I felt the need to share my experience in hopes it will help someone else on deciding the best training. James does an excellent job of meeting you where you are. What I love most, he tailors the training according to your needs rather than expecting you to adjust to their expectations. I believe Bella and I have formed a deeper bond because of James knowledge and support. I can confidently say that Bella is on the right path to becoming a well behaved companion. Thank you Bark Busters!!!
At our first meeting, we were provided with such valuable information to put into immediate action. Learning dog language (while challenging due to years of old habits) made a big difference in getting our dogs attention to participate in training. In just 2 days our dogs already look to us for instruction and I know with continued practice it will even improve! Jeri gave clear and detailed verbal and written instructions. Thank you Jeri!
Our two female dogs recently broke into a bad fight out of nowhere. My husband and I got worried because we were going to our trip in the beginning of February and the fight happened literally on Christmas night.

My husband told me to quickly call trainers around the area to figure out the best estimate and best advice for the issues we were facing. I literally cried because we have had these two girls being sisters to each other for 6 years with no sign of aggression to suddenly be fighting and not being able to be in the same room.

I called a few places and got a hold of Jared. When I spoke to him on the phone he was the only person that was not trying sell me something right away. He was honest with me hoping that we didn't need to pay for the service because he was hoping a quick back to normal between them.

I told my husband that we will hired Jared when we need him. And we did! It has been a great training experience for us. Jared has been well in giving us tips and advices. He helped us bringing our dogs back to normal pretty quickly too. Now they are back to normal that I somewhat felt that I was gaslit by my dogs.

We are excited to continue using Jared of our dog training for the whole year and glad that we found someone who is genuinely forthcoming with their training and services without trying to just upsell us!
We recently had the pleasure of working with Rob. He designed a behavioral training plan for our adopted dog Holly who has separation anxiety, excessive barking, and is overly excitable. Rob’s calm manner during our home training session was professional, informative, and tailored with strategies that suited Holly’s needs.
Robs behavioral training plan provided clear step by step instructions that were easy to understand and implement during our first training session.
The importance of establishing rules, building trust and creating boundaries were particularly beneficial. We are very grateful!
Highly recommend!
We wish we would have contacted Bark Busters long ago! We are a much happier fur family now! The barking and leash pulling has decreased significantly. Our dogs are more calm and relaxed and generally happier. Highly recommend Michael at Bark Busters!
Michael did a great job walking us through the process to practice the role-playing to ensure that we could properly train our German Shepherd.
He was patient and very clear and instructions and I think we are in a good place moving forward.
Miguel was fantastic with my dog--and with me! Lola is a Great Pyr-Lab mix, age 5, who is high energy, pulls on the leash, and barks loudly at passersby, especially those with dogs. Miguel gave me a new leash that has worked wonders. Now I enjoy walking her. He also taught me how to manage her very loud barking at people at the front door, laying down in her bed so as not to drive me nuts when I'm trying to read or work on the computer. Miguel is also very kind. Due to a serious health condition I've developed recently, in which I can't risk being pulled over or jumped on, he has been looking for a foster or forever home for Lola. I recommend Miguel 1,000%!!! He is excellent at his craft and a natural dog whisperer!
Luis was extremely helpful with guiding us and teaching us how to properly show our puppy Skye some boundaries around the house. As well as training her how to calmly walk with us on our outings.
We hired Justin for our 1 year old Frenchie, Medusa. She used to be a total nightmare. Food aggressive toward our other Frenchie, snapping whenever we tried to wipe anything in front of her, couldn't fix blankets without her attacking them, constant jumping/hyperactivity and she would NEVER sit in her car seat for a ride, constantly had to be held. After working with Justin, everything changed.

Justin never used a shock collar or boarded her. He came to our home and used his corrective action and tool kit to keep her in the green zone at all times. Within a few sessions she stopped guarding her food, allowed us to clean without any aggression, and for the first time she slept through an entire car ride.

The results have been dramatic and lasting. Justin also taught US clear, humane cues so we can keep the progress going on our own. If you want a trainer who respects your dog, works in your environment, and delivers real, lasting change, Justin is the one to call. He is also a super amazing human who has great energy and responds to every text/questions even after the sessions. He will definitely be getting a Christmas gift! He has changed our lives and hers!!
We have two dogs whom we rescued and, despite weighing only 30 lbs. each, they were running the place. They only responded to commands when there was something in it for them.
We just had our initial 3 hour session with Michael, and already they are calmer, less timid in new situations, and respond almost immediately when they are corrected - by using our voices and/or clapping almost exclusively.
We have tried obedience classes and training methods before with other dogs - and none of them have made this much difference in so little time!
Michael was amazing as he was very kind and patient. His knowledge of a dogs brain and how it works made our first session a success.I am impressed how much Duke learned in a short period of time. Now instead of feeling anxious about taking him out I feel more confident.Looking forward to our next sessions.Thank you Mike!!
Highly recommend! Barbara has been amazing with my dog. After the first visit alone, I saw such a big difference in his manners. Not only has it been great for my dog, but for me as the owner. Barbara has helped me gain such a boost in confidence in training him also.
We would highly recommend Sharon and Bark Busters. We were having trouble with our pup especially with personal space, general obedience, no recall, fear of people, and barking at everything. We have had many dogs before but this one is a handful. When Sharon came, it was remarkable how quickly our dog responded. She showed us simple, effective exercises and clearly explained what we needed to do to get our dog where we wanted her to be. It was also great to have a training method that is friendly and not treat-driven. Looking back, it’s surprising how far off we were in using the right approach, but with Sharon’s guidance, we’ve seen a dramatic improvement in our dog.
Bark Busters training absolutely transformed the dynamic with our two beloved pit bull rescues!!
As dog-owners for 18 years, it was extremely disheartening to be experiencing such a difficult time with these two otherwise sweet and affectionate dogs. Both were very reactive to other dogs, cats, squirrels, birds, etc. and walks had become a dreaded task. One was extremely fearful and reactive to loud noises. After numerous incidents of being dragged or knocked over during walks, we decided to look into some training. Within one session, James taught us how to communicate effectively with them and gave us skills to practice to achieve calm, relaxing walks with our pups. It is well worth the time and the expense to give it a try. We wish we had done it sooner instead of spending a fortune on dozens of leashes, "no-pull" harnesses, prong collars, even pet store training classes that never, never fixed the problem. The method James teaches WORKS!! It is not an exaggeration to say it was life-changing for our family!!
And in the span of just a few weeks, I have never seen our two dogs, Honey & Cookie, more confident and content.
Our super reactive lab has been through 4 different trainers and he has gotten a little better each time but has been VERY challenging with guests at our home and walks in our neighborhood - until we met James with Bark Busters! Having James come to our house and train in our neighborhood has been a game changer. We had SIGNIFICANT progress after just one visit - more than several lessons with all our other trainers.

James is great at explaining how to read Carl, he gives us different tools to use for Carl's different issues and always follows up with a thorough summary of what we went over in lessons and what to continue to work on.

It is incredible the change we have seen in our boy Carl and we are so grateful to James! And he is a super nice guy to boot!
We had a fantastic experience working with James and can't recommend him highly enough.
Our dog Yaki used to be a serious puller on walks and would get overly excited whenever he saw other dogs.
It got to the point where we'd actively avoid other dogs altogether--which isn't exactly practical in a townhome community full of them.

James didn't just "train the dog"-he trained us. He helped us understand how to recognize when Yaki was entering that "yellow zone" before things escalated to red, and gave us the tools to redirect him early. His approach focused on energy, body language, and even using our own "bark" to communicate clearly and confidently.

The biggest shift was helping Yaki understand that he doesn't need to protect us--we've got that covered.
That change alone made a world of difference.

Now, walks are actually enjoyable. We can move through our neighborhood calmly and confidently without the constant stress we used to feel.

If you're dealing with similar challenges, James is absolutely worth it.
Lynn Woodard was above and beyond our wildest expectations. She only had 2 weeks to work with our daughter’s dog, Daisy. She was so professional, kind and supportive, and after only 3 sessions we all saw a huge change in both Daisy’s behavior and the way in which our daughter now felt comfortable and in control.
Thank you Lynn for all your help. You are an asset to your company, a real gem.
Lynn is a class act! She is truly amazing. So kind and professional and knowledgeable. We are so impressed! Thank you Lynn!! Love the approach and the simplicity. She is a real gem!
First I want to start by saying it all started with the first initial phone call…. Hanna was wonderful and put me at complete ease with my difficult pet situation. We then met and again still just as wonderful in person as on the phone she’s great with my pets and helps to train us as well!

Puppy Training FAQs

Every puppy needs high-quality food, separate food and water bowls, a secure place to sleep with comfortable bedding, a well-made collar and leash, and a few toys.

Each of these items helps keep your puppy safe, comfortable, and assists with their adjustment to their new home.

Start by providing your puppy the same food they are used to and make any switches slowly – an abrupt change to different foods can cause an upset stomach. For play and teething, a puzzle-type toy is ideal. Avoid buying dozens of toys and treats, however, as too many toys confuse a puppy about what they should and should not chew.

Familiar scents, such as a soft blanket rubbed against the mother and littermates, can help make separation less traumatic.

Most importantly, give your puppy lots of love and human company!

Your puppy is curious, and their mouth is an exploratory tool. Chewing is a natural function of your dog's development, a source of stress release, and if effectively managed, can be a way to prevent the onsite of destructive behaviors, including separation anxiety. Puppies do not necessarily mean to be aggressive when they nip, bite or chew.

If your puppy tries to bite your hand, stop moving them. If they try to bite your leg, stand still.

When your pup does make a mistake, do not use treats as bribes to stop undesirable behavior – instead, use a firm voice or sound to express your displeasure. If necessary, clap your hands for emphasis.

Use Bitter Apple spray on your hands, clothing, and other items – its unpleasant taste can deter biting.

Guide your puppy to appropriate alternatives, such as giving them a favorite chew toy.

We recommend providing appropriately sized chew toys and introducing these safe chews while your dog is in a crate or "place." Introducing chew toys in this way will help create positive associations and also allow you to observe their behavior with new toy to ensure its safety.

When using your hands in training, make sure your puppy always associates them with gentleness and enjoyment.

Your puppy is naturally a den animal – a crate is a peaceful haven where your pup can feel secure.

Crates allow you to relax or complete tasks that are difficult while watching your puppy. They also help with training by limiting your puppy’s mistakes to times when you are present and prepared to teach.

Dogs naturally avoid soiling their dens, so a crate is a great tool for potty training. Ensure the crate is only large enough for your puppy to stand up and turn around – any larger and they may soil a corner where they do not sleep. Built-in dividers can help, if needed.

Keep the crate near you as much as possible so your puppy doesn’t feel removed from the rest of the family.

A crate should never be used as punishment!

Be proactive! Your puppy has not yet developed the awareness or physical capability to control their bodily functions like an adult dog and needs plentiful opportunities to relieve himself.

As a guideline, puppies can hold their bladders for the number of hours equal to their age in months plus one. For example, a two-month-old puppy can last about three hours.

Confine your puppy to a specific room or smaller area of the house by closing doors and using baby gates (and/or a crate) while they are learning. Be sure to take your puppy out at regular intervals, as well as these six critical times:

  1. After waking up
  2. Before going to bed for the night
  3. After eating or drinking
  4. After/during excitement or exuberant play
  5. If frightened or nervous
  6. After the family arrives home

Remain in the designated potty area until your puppy is finished, then reward them with lots of excited praise.

Have patience! A common mistake is to return inside too soon, only to experience an unexpected mess.

The best method is to help your puppy avoid mistakes.

If you do catch them in the act, quickly take them to the designated potty area and praise them as they continue to potty. If you find a mess after the fact, all you can do is clean it up.

Accidents are part of toilet training, but good management reduces how often they occur. Treat each accident as feedback—your puppy needed a break sooner than expected.

Clean the spot thoroughly so the scent doesn’t draw them back, and reset your routine with more timely trips outside.

Do not “correct” your puppy for soiling, as puppies may become scared of being grabbed or learn to hide and toilet. Never become physical or hit your puppy. Your hands are for praise only.

When new dog owners ask, “How do I socialize my puppy?”, the answers they find often focus on playdates, dog parks, or meeting every dog on the block. But at Bark Busters, we take a different approach: Our recommendation is rooted in calm, controlled exposure, not overstimulation or forced interaction.

True socialization isn’t about letting your puppy interact with everyone! Socialization means safely and slowly exposing your puppy to new experiences and environments. For example, new sights, smells, terrain, and people and dogs, as appropriate for their temperament.

Help your puppy to:

  • Stay calm and focused around new people, dogs, and distractions
  • Observe without reacting
  • Feel secure in unfamiliar environments
  • Look to you for guidance and reassurance

The most vital period of a puppy’s development is between 8-16 weeks, which is an ideal time for education and socialization.

What to Avoid During Puppy Socialization

Just as important as knowing how to socialize your puppy is knowing what not to do. Common mistakes can lead to fear, reactivity, or unwanted behaviors.

Avoid:

  • Dog parks – Too much stimulation, too little control
  • Leash greetings – Can lead to pulling, frustration, or aggression
  • Overwhelming environments too early – This creates fear, not confidence
  • Letting fear “work itself out” – Without guidance, fear can turn into long-term anxiety

At Bark Busters, we teach you how to read your puppy’s body language, respond calmly, and build trust at every step.

Take things slow and expose your puppy carefully to new situations. When in doubt, ask your veterinarian or your local Bark Busters trainer for advice on proper socialization.

Puppies need lots of love, play, and rest.

Most of all, puppies need sleep! In fact, they need 18-20 hours of sleep over a 24-hour period when they are young.

Each puppy is different, so let your puppy tell you when they’re tired. Do not take a young puppy jogging or force them to play – these activities can cause overexertion or injury.

Group and individual lessons serve different needs, but any type of professional training can help dog owners who are looking for personalized, trouble-free, and effective solutions for their puppy's issues. It can also help you and your puppy understand each other better, making both your lives more enjoyable.

Your puppy will provide new and different challenges as they get older. Combining puppy school with one-on-one lessons can address them with more complete and in-depth training.

If you decide to enroll your puppy in group classes, ensure that all dogs have been vaccinated to prevent exposure to disease. and that your puppy is grouped with dogs of equal size or similar personality types, so that the experience doesn’t frighten your inexperienced puppy.

Bark Busters offers professional home dog training, and, in some areas, puppy classes. Our natural training methods work with puppies as young as eight weeks.
